Wishes, will power and self-discipline

"Tomorrow is the only day in the year that appeals to a lazy man."
-   Jimmy Lyons

We all have wishes, but very few of us set out to get what we want. Wishes are like seeds. A student starts off with wishes. However, seeds are no good if you do not plant them, are they?

Wishes alone are of no use and it will not bring success. Often it is self-discipline and will power that makes dreams come true. Most students lack this self-discipline and will power. Many a time we start to do something, only to quit after a short while?

What then is self-discipline and will power? Will power is the ability to overcome laziness and procrastination. You need will power to control or reject unnecessary or harmful impulses. It is the ability to arrive at a decision and follow it with perseverance until its successful accomplishment. It is the power that overcomes the desire to indulge in unnecessary and useless habits. You need strong will power to be successful.

Will power will teach you to do what should be done and when it should be done regardless of whether you like it or not.

Self-discipline goes hand in hand with will power. It is the ability to withstand hardships and difficulties, whether physical, emotional or mental. It is the ability to reject immediate satisfaction, in order to gain something better, but which requires effort and time.

Each time you feel lazy and feel like postponing something that needs to be done, overcome your laziness and just do what you have to do. The most difficult thing is the decision and the first step. Once you commence on what you have to do it will flow smoothly and you will finish what you started to do. When you finish what you had started to do you will find that it was not that difficult after all. This exercise will strengthen your will power and self-discipline.

Get rid of your bad habits one by one or reduce them gradually. If you watch 4 TV programmes a day cut it to 3 and then to 2 and finally don’t watch TV unless it is a real good show. You have to believe that TV will still be there after your examinations. You can then watch as much TV as you want. This is what is meant when I wrote above about rejecting immediate satisfaction in order to gain something better. Learn how to overcome negative habits and indecisiveness, and be in control of yourself and your life.

Developing and strengthening your will power and self-discipline is vital for achieving success. Experience will prove to you that developing will power and self-discipline is not that difficult if you desire it as much as the guy who was led to the river by Socrates. Willpower and self-discipline are the ultimate keys to achieving your goal and realizing your dream.
