5 Multiplication table

"Leaders aren't born they are made.
And they are made just like anything else,
through hard work.  And that's the price
we have to pay to achieve that goal,
      or any goal."
                         -   Vince Lombardi

Multiplying by 5 is real easy because the result either ends in '5' or '0', so you know  you have  gone wrong if you get a number that doesn't end in '5' or '0'.
First show your child the following 5 times table and let him observe it closely.
Let him see that the last digit in the answers is 5 , 0, 5 in that pattern. Explain to him
that the answer ends in 5 when the number multiplied by 5 is an odd number and 0 when multiplied by an even number.

  •                  5 x 1 =  5
  •                  5 x 2 = 10
  •                  5 x 3 = 15
  •                  5 x 4 = 20
  •                  5 x 5 = 25
  •                  5 x 6 = 30
  •                  5 x 7 = 35
  •                  5 x 8 = 40
  •                  5 x 9 = 45
  •                  5 x 10 = 50

When you multiply an even number by 5, take half of that number and add a zero after it.

          e.g. 5X8 (8 is an even number)

                       Take half of 8=4
                       Add a zero: 40

5x12 (12 is an even number)
                        Take half of 12 =6
                        Add a zero: 60

When you multiply an odd number by 5, subtract 1 from the number and take half of that number. Then add a 5 after it.

         e.g. 5X9 (9 is an odd number)

                        Subtract 1 from 9= 8
                        Take half of 8 = 4
                        Add a 5 = 45

Another e.g. 5x5 (5 is an odd number)

                        Subtract 1 from 5 = 4
                        Take half of 4 = 2
                        Add a 5 after it = 25

Another way to look at 5 times table is to take any number, then divide it by 2 (in other words, halve the number). If the result is whole, add a 0 at the end. If it is not, ignore the remainder and add a 5 at the end.
